At the 2023 NAB, Portkeys’ new flagship model BM7IIDS has undoubtedly captured the attention of numerous
photographers and industry professionals. What are the highlights of this flagship monitor that are worth our attention?
Overall, the BM7 II DS is a rugged and durable 7-inch touchscreen monitor that boasts a maximum brightness of 2200nits. It features HDMI
input/output ports, two SDI inputs, one SDI output with HDMI cross conversion, and wired/
wirelss camera control capabilities. Additionally, the standout feature is its dual view
monitoring, which is highly practical in the prevailing era of KOL economy.
Speaking of the aforementioned 2200nits brightness, many people may have a slight concern
about the temperature control and color accuracy of highbright monitors. So, does the
display quality of this monitor live up to expectations? I believe professional data can
provide an answer:
According to test results based on Minolta CA210 and CS200, the brightness in REC709 mode
can reach up to 2144nits, which essentially meets the specified value of 2200nits.
The color gamut coverage of the BM7IIDS reaches 107% under the REC709 standard. It is
worth mentioning that the gamma of the monitor is quite accurate, staying within the
acceptable range of 2.3 to 2.5 across all brightness levels. The only minor issue lies in the
color temperature, specifically the white point, which may experience some drift.
Next, let’s discuss the issue of color gradation accuracy. As the saturation of color gradations
increases, it becomes challenging to maintain a satisfactory range for Δ’e at extremely high
brightness levels. However, in the color accuracy test using ColorChecker, the BM7IIDS
undoubtedly falls within a very good standard range.
For many DP (Director of Photography), the accuracy of gamma, which refers to the accurate
reproduction of image contrast, actually has a greater impact on their early progress. And
this is also the most outstanding feature of BM7IIDS. As shown in the figure, even at a
brightness of 2200nits, BM7IIDS can maintain excellent display quality. However, the REC709
mode is not actually the best working mode for BM7IIDS. According to test results, the
optimal working mode of BM7IIDS is actually the P3-D65 mode, which is commonly referred
to as displayP3
In this mode, its maximum brightness can reach 2236 nits, and what’s truly remarkable is that
the issue of white point drift, which occurred in the REC709 mode, is completely eliminated in
the P3-D65 mode. The representation of the white point becomes highly accurate,
and the aforementioned crucial gamma remains within an excellent range. All of these factors
contribute to a comprehensive and outstanding color accuracy performance
In the ColorChecker test, BM7IIDS performs even better than in the REC709 mode.
