Sony's a6000 mirrorless camera is a great, affordable option for photography enthusiasts. However, if you want to use it as an external monitor for other devices, like your laptop or desktop computer, then you may find yourself in need of an HDMI-to-USB adapter cable. This can be difficult to find at best and completely impossible at worst. Fortunately, there's another solution: using an active monitor with a built-in HDMI port and simply connecting it via USB instead of HDMI!
You need an active external Camera Monitor that supports HDMI input. You can buy one for about $200.
Then, you need a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable (about $15).
You will also want to change your camera's HDMI output settings:
Change the setting from AUTO (this means it will pick the highest resolution it can) to 4k (3840 x 2160) or 1080p60hz. If you don't know what those numbers mean, choose 4k. It's higher quality than 1080p but takes up less space on your hard drive when you transfer files later.
4K is the latest high-resolution standard for computer monitors, and it’s one that can be output to your A6000. However, there are a few caveats involved:
You need an active monitor that supports HDMI input. The Sony A6000 does not support 4K over its micro-HDMI port, so you'll need an external display with an HDMI input, like this LG 24MP88HM-S 24" IPS Monitor Monitor or this Samsung 28" LED Monitor (S28E310C) (if you want a bigger screen).
You need an HDMI cable. Any old mini-HDMI cable won’t do—you need one with an HDMI 1.4a connection at least and preferably one with 4K support as well (more on that in a moment). Here's our top pick: AmazonBasics High Speed 2m (6ft) M/M Cable - Supports Ethernet & Audio Return Channel (ARC) - Black
You may also need an adapter if your monitor doesn't have enough inputs on its back panel for everything you want to connect at once; our recommendation here would be AmazonBasics Mini DisplayPort To DVI Adapter Cable - Black . This will only work if your External Camera Screen has DVI inputs or if it uses DisplayPort connections instead of mini-DisplayPort ones, which most computers don't use anymore these days anyway!
