I’ve been an indie filmmaker and photographer for years, and I know how hard it is to find the right tools for your craft. After trying out the 703 Bright Monitor from SmallHD, I can say that this monitor is a solid tool for indie filmmakers and photographers alike.
The build quality of the monitor is good, with a metal chassis and a good stand that's both sturdy and adjustable. The bezels are fairly thin, with minimal branding on them. Overall it feels like a solid monitor.
The 703 is large enough to get work done without feeling cramped, but it's not massive—so if you're looking for something that takes up your whole desk or wall, this isn't it (but if you want to go big there are plenty of other options). It's also heavy at around 11 pounds (5 kg), which can make moving it around inconvenient if you're constantly rearranging your setup or taking it somewhere else.
The price tag is higher than most budget monitors I've seen; however as far as I know this is one of the few 4K monitors out there that has HDR support so that makes sense in some ways; still though $1k+ for any computer accessory seems pretty steep no matter what specs it has.
Brightness refers to the brightest a monitor can get. The 700 nits of brightness on the 703 means it's bright enough to be used outdoors in direct sunlight. Contrast ratio refers to how well colors are represented on screen, with 3000:1 being good for most situations and 16.7 million colors meaning you'll see every shade possible on this display.
The 703 is calibrated to a Delta E of less than 2, meaning that the 703 can display colors more accurately than most monitors. The 703 has a color gamut of 99% DCI-P3 and 97% of Rec. 2020, which means that it can display most colors within the specified ranges.
The 703 has a wide array of features that make it an ideal monitor for the professional filmmaker and video editor. It offers HDR, Rec. 2020, and DCI-P3 color spaces with a 10-bit display and 4096 x 2160 resolution. The 3G-SDI and HDMI inputs allow you to connect your camera or computer to the monitor so you can view what you’re filming in real time without having to spend hours editing footage on your computer after shooting.
The 703 also comes equipped with two outputs: 3G-SDI and HDMI. This means you can use one input from your camera or computer on both outputs simultaneously, making it easy for multiple people to see what is being filmed at any given moment without having to worry about which source device should be used for each output source (or vice versa). Additionally, these outputs are capable of accepting 4K signals at 60 frames per second (fps) — perfect if you want high quality live monitoring when recording audio as well!
And speaking of audio inputs and outputs: they’re included too! The 703 is a monitor that can be used with any computer you have. It has an HDMI connection, so if your computer has an HDMI port, use that to connect it to the computer. If your computer doesn't have an HDMI port, you can still use this monitor by using a converter box that allows you to convert the signal from VGA or DVI into HDMI.
It also comes with USB ports and audio jacks if needed (which I don't think I've ever used).
The resolution on this screen is 1920 x 1080 pixels—that's 1080p! The aspect ratio is 16:9 (or 1.78:1), which means it will fit perfectly in an HDTV as well as on this monitor for gaming purposes! Its contrast ratio is 1000:1 and response time is 5ms
Pros:
Affordable. The 703 Bright Monitor is a great value for the price, and it's only $299 on Amazon.
Easy setup and use. The monitor has a simple design that makes it easy to set up and use right away.
Cons:
Limited input options. The 703 Bright Monitor only has one HDMI input, so you won't be able to connect multiple devices at once without an adapter or splitter. Also, there are no audio outputs if you want to get sound from your computer through the monitor (you'll need an external speaker system).
The 703 is a solid tool for an indie filmmaker or photographer. It has good build quality, brightness, contrast, color accuracy and features. If you are looking for a monitor with those specs in mind then this is the one to get. For now it's only compatible with Mac computers but they are working on Windows compatibility so hopefully it will be available soon!
